US Urges Its Nationals in Russia to leave immediately
Following the invasion of Ukraine, the United States has suggested that Americans living in Russia leave as soon as possible, according to reports.
“US citizens should consider departing Russia immediately via commercial options still available,” said the State Department, which had previously urged US citizens not to travel to Russia.
The government cautioned that as international sanctions bite, choices for getting out of Russia are narrowing swiftly, with several nations having banned their airspace to Russian airlines.
“The US government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to US citizens in Russia is severely limited,” the statement said.
It warned of “potential for harassment against US citizens by Russian government security officials.”
The updated guideline comes on the heels of the department’s declaration earlier in the day that non-emergency personnel and their families at the US Embassy in Moscow are now permitted to leave the country without restriction.
