Dr. Chike Akunyili is the husband to the former director-general of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control of Nigeria.
Dora Akunyili was reportedly killed by unknown gunmen in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday morning, September 27.
J.C. Akunyili had six children and three grandchildren with his late wife. His daughter, Njideka Akunyili Crosby was awarded the prestigious Genius Grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in 2017.
Dora died at a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India on the 7th of June, 2014 after a two-year battle with uterine cancer.
The news of Dr. Chike’s death came as a shock to Nigerians, with a lot wondering whether it was stray bullets or he was targeted directly.
He was returning from a trip to Onitsha, where he had gone to obtain a posthumous award of excellence for his late wife when he ran into the hoodlums at Nkpor and was shot and killed.
