Hailing from Maiduguri, Borno State, Kyari is renowned for his contributions to law enforcement and is affiliated with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Let’s take a closer look at his early life, career, and recent events that brought him into the spotlight.
Abba Kyari Early Life and Career
Abba Kyari’s journey in law enforcement began in 2000 when he was admitted to the Police Academy Wudil, Kano State. He successfully graduated as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and was posted to the Adamawa State Police Command for a mandatory one-year attachment in the Song Police Division. Kyari’s dedication and commitment earned him subsequent roles as Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) in Numan, Adamawa State, and later as the Unit Commander 14 PMF Yola.
Notably, he served as the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at the Lagos State Police Command, where he gained recognition for his work in tackling violent crimes
Unfortunately, in July 2021, Abba Kyari’s name became entangled in a controversy involving Hushpuppi, a notorious alleged Nigerian fraudster. The United States Government leveled money laundering charges against Hushpuppi, implicating Kyari in an international scheme to defraud a Qatari school founder and launder over 1.1 million dollars in illicit proceeds. This revelation led to Kyari’s suspension from duty pending the outcome of an inquiry.
Following the suspension, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, conducted an investigation into the matter. In December 2021, the findings of the investigative panel were delivered to the Police Service Commission.
