Biography Of Newton Aduaka
Newton was born in Eastern Nigeria in 1966 and moved to Lagos with his family when the Biafran War ended in 1970. He moved to The United Kingdom (UK) in 1985 to study engineering, but he fell in love with cinema and went to the London International Film School, where he graduated in 1990. Granite Film Works was founded by him in 1997.
Newton’s debut feature film Rage, released nationwide in 2001, was the first entirely independently financed picture by a black filmmaker in British movie history. It was well-received when it first came out. He co-wrote, directed, and executive produced Ezra, his first quasi funded film, for Arte France between 2005 and 2007. In 2001-2002, he was Filmmaker in Residence at the Cinéfondation du Festival de Cannes in Paris.
Outstanding Newton I. Aduaka, a Nigerian filmmaker residing in Paris, began his career in the UK in the 1990s. Rage (2000), his award-winning and much-discussed debut feature, was the UK’s first hip hop film and the first film by an independent black filmmaker to be released on a national level. Aduaka’s works have appeared at film festivals all over the world, winning honors such as the Golden Stallion of Yennenga (best film) at Fespaco 2007 for his second feature, Ezra, and the FIPRESCI International Critics Award for his third feature, One Man’s Show, at FESPACO 2013. Oil on Water, his fourth feature film (now in preparation), was selected for the Cinéfondation’s Atelier at Cannes in 2014.
