We have not approved new electricity tariff – NERC

The Nigerian Power Regulatory Commission (NERC) has said that it has not given any new approvals for electricity pricing increases in Nigeria.

The commission indicated that what the power distribution firms refer to as a new/increased price is the permission issued since December 31, 2021, but which only became effective in February 2022.

Mr. Sanusi Garba, the chairman of NERC, made the explanation on Friday in an interview with journalists in Abuja.

Following reports that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had authorized pricing hikes for six power distribution firms, Nigerians were outraged (DisCos).

However, Garba clarified that any customer who has witnessed a spike in the previous one or two weeks should come forward with documentation.

In his words:

“I want to, on behalf of the management of NERC, clearly state that as of today (Friday), we have not approved any rate review and there is no indication that any electricity distribution company is increasing its tariff.

“If you notice that the rate you buy electricity has changed within the last one to three weeks, we want evidence. The information posted on the NERC website was the last tariff rate review in December 2021.

“Our function is to approve applications for tariffs for the distribution companies, and we have not received any.

“We have clearly said that we have an obligation by law to do minor review every six months to take care of inflation, forex and so on.”
