Valerie was born to Nancy (née Carvin) and Andrew Bertinelli in Wilmington, Delaware. Her father, a senior executive at General Motors, led the family to move frequently. They lived in various places, including Claymont, Delaware; Clarkston, Michigan; Shreveport, Louisiana; Oklahoma City, and Los Angeles, California. Valerie had three brothers, David, Patrick, and Drew, and sadly lost an older brother, Mark, to accidental poisoning before she was born.
