Valerie was born to Nancy (née Carvin) and Andrew Bertinelli in Wilmington, Delaware. Her father, a senior executive at General Motors, led the family to move frequently. They lived in various places, including Claymont, Delaware; Clarkston, Michigan; Shreveport, Louisiana; Oklahoma City, and Los Angeles, California. Valerie had three brothers, David, Patrick, and Drew, and sadly lost an older brother, Mark, to accidental poisoning before she was born.
She grew up in a Roman Catholic household and attended Granada Hills High School. To pursue her passion for acting, Valerie enrolled at the Tami Lynn School of Artists in Los Feliz, California.
