See How Obiano Tried To Stop His Arrest With A Court Order
Willie Obiano, the immediate former Governor of Anambra State, allegedly acquired a court injunction on Thursday to prevent his apprehension at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained Obiano and his wife, Ebelechukwu, on their trip to the United States approximately 8.30 p.m.
Obiano has been on the anti-corruption agency’s radar since November 2021 for alleged wrongdoing while in government.
According to a story on TheCable, the former governor obtained a court injunction and attempted to utilize it to prevent his arrest at the Lagos airport.
While traveling through customs procedures at the airport, authorities from the Department of State Services (DSS) notified the former governor that he had been ordered to halt, arrest, and give him over to the EFCC.
Obiano allegedly dug into his suitcase and obtained a court order barring the EFCC from detaining him at this moment.
Obiano was hauled into jail minutes later after the DSS personnel instructed him to give the directive to the anti-graft agency instead.
Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s spokesperson, affirmed the former governor’s detention but promised to provide more information later.
“It is true. He was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 8.30pm,” Uwujaren said.
