Police Apprehends Five Wanted Cult Members In Ogun state
After a gun fight with the suspects, the Ogun State Police Command said on Sunday that it had apprehended five alleged cultists turned armed robbers along Molipa road in Ijebu Ode.
The suspects were described as “dreaded” by the command, who said that they had been on the wanted list for a long time.
The accused, Segun Olabiyi nicknamed Koleje, Musa Atanda alias Musa sars, Olorunjuedalo Adewale, Olamide Odewole, and Peter Anuoluwapo Akinyemi, were detained at their hideaway on Sunday, according to the Police Spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi.
According to Oyeyemi, the Obalende divisional headquarters in Ijebu Ode received information that hoodlums “members of the Aiye confraternity” had convened in a hotel to prepare a “deadly assault.”
According to him, the DPO Obalende division’s SP Salami Murphy mobilized his troops and rushed to the spot after receiving the intelligence information.
“On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums engaged them in a gun battle but they were subdued by the superior firepower of the policemen, which eventually led to the arrest of five amongst them while others escaped with bullet injuries,” Oyeyemi said.
The suspects were found at the site with one locally built short pistol, two live cartridges, and several illicit charms, according to him.
According to Oyeyemi, the suspects were “actively engaged in several cult battles that had taken many lives, including that of a serving policeman Sergeant Akeem Oseni posted to Igbeba division,” according to preliminary inquiry.
He said “Their trademark according to their confession is to cut off the right hand of their victims after killing them. They also confessed to have been involved in some robbery operations in Ijebu Ode and its environs and that one of their prominent leaders simply known as Perth was killed in one of the robbery operations.”
According to Oyeyemi, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, praised “his men’s valor and professionalism” and ordered that the suspects be sent to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for a quiet investigation.
He went on to say that the CP also ordered his officers to take the fight to all known criminals in the state, in order to make Ogun State a peaceful environment for everybody.
