DCP Abba Kyari, the suspended chief of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), and six others have been charged with narcotics trafficking by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Mr Kyari, who is also sought in the United States for his ties with convicted fraudster Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abass, was charged with eight charges of hard drug trafficking by the NDLEA.
Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Sunday Ubua, Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP Bawa James, Inspector Simon Agirigba, Inspector John Nuhu, Chibuinna Patrick Umeibe, and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne are among those charged by the NDLEA.
Justice Emeka Nwite arraigned Abba Kyari and the other accused.
According to the anti-narcotics agency, the officers, led by Kyari, committed the crime at the IRT office in Abuja between January 19 and 25, 2022, in collusion with one ASP John Umoru, who is now at large, in violation of section 14(b) of the NDLEA Act, CAP N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The defendants are scheduled to enter a plea to the NDLEA’s eight-count criminal complaint against them.
