According to Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim, Director of the National Youth Service Corps, members of the corps should refrain from using social media to promote false information or create enmity among members of the community.

the Director-General, who was represented by the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, Chinyere Ekwe, issued the warning during the swearing-in ceremony of 1,608 Corps members deployed to Akwa Ibom State among the 2022 Batch A Stream 1 at the Orientation Camp, Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai Local Government Area on Tuesday.

Along with cautioning them against drug abuse, cultism, and other social vices, the Director-General of the NYSC also reminded them about one of the major objectives of the NYSC, which is the promotion of national unity and integration, emphasizing the importance of promoting ideals that will bring the nation together.

During the orientation exercise, he advised the corps members to take advantage of the chances for self-employment provided by the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme (SAED).

“Let me use this opportunity to caution you against indulgence in cultism, drug abuse and other social vices.

“I also urge you to avoid using social media for spreading fake news, fuelling of hatred and other negative purposes, and instead deploy same for the promotion of unity and development.

“You are strongly advised to be security conscious at all times, and to report any suspicious characters or activities around you to the appropriate authorities,” Ibrahim said.

He asked the corps members to guarantee that they were immunized in accordance with the Federal Government’s directive.

A high amount of discipline was expected of corps members, said Ibrahim, who started the ceremony by reminding them that the structured aspect of the camp was designed to instill discipline and create resilience.
