Kaduna – Abuja Train Attack: Nobody Has The Right To Apprehends Gumi – Arewa Youths
A fresh round of requests for the detention of controversial Islamic scholar Sheik Ahmad Gumi has prompted the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) to speak out in favor of the cleric.
Following the latest assault by bandit terrorists on the Abuja-Kaduna train last week, there have been fresh demands from certain quarters for Gumi to be arrested on suspicion of having ties to and access to the bandits and their commanders, according to reports.
However, the president of the AYCF, Yerima Shettima, claims that the pastor has done nothing illegal and that no one has the authority to arrest him.
He went on to say that Gumi has done all he can to persuade the bandits to lay down their guns, but that certain officials in government who want to gain from the issue have been undermining his attempts.
Shettima also accused certain government officials of diverting cash that were intended for the purchase of firearms for security officers to use in the battle against terrorism.
While Speaking with Daily Post, he said:
“Why should anybody call for the arrest of Sheikh Gumi? What has he done? What is his offense? He has done his best to help the government, but the government pretends not to know he exists and refuses to give him support.
“The government refused to collaborate with him not because he is part of them but because of his position as an Islamic scholar. He has done what he can, and at a point, he realized that they were sabotaging and frustrating him, and he declined that he would not participate again. There is no reason to arrest him; nobody has the right to arrest him because he has done nothing.
“Those who should be arrested are those sabotaging and compromising our security. Those who should be arrested are those who diverted money allocated to him to buy weapons. We will not fold our arms and allow that nonsense to happen; what is his offense?”
