Gbajabiamila To Be Installed As Aare Baasofin
Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, is slated to be installed as the Aare Baasofin of Yorubaland in Oyo town (the Supreme Lawmaker of Yorubaland).
Following the death of Oyo’s Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the installation of Gbajabiamila was put on hold.
On Sunday, the Oyomesi, headed by High Chief Olayinka Ayoola, the traditional Prime Minister of Oyo, affirmed that the installation will proceed.
The installation is set to take place on May 27, 2022, as part of Gbajabiamila’s 60th birthday celebrations.
On Sunday, during Gbajabiamila’s condolence visit to the palace royal family and the people of Oyo, the installation was verified.
The chiefs and the next Alaafin will complete Gbajabiamila’s installation as Baasofin of Yoruba country, according to Oyomesi.
While addressing Gbajabiamila, one of late Alaafin’s children, Prince Akeem Adeyemi, disclosed why late Oba Adeyemi awarded the chieftaincy title on the congressman.
He said:
“The Alaafin asked, ‘Since democracy started in Nigeria, who from Yoruba land has been outstanding in the National Assembly? Which lawmaker from Yoruba has the highest number of bills? Which one has moved the highest number of motions? Which one has the best legislative performance?
“The person who has ticked all these boxes is Femi Gbajabiamila…As the Alaafin has said, so it is. This is the Aare Baasofin.”
