EFCC Discloses Reason Behind Obiano Arrest
Mr. Willie Obiano, the immediate former governor of Anambra State, has been taken into custody, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Wilson Uwajaren, the EFCC’s Public Relations Officer, acknowledged that the arrest had taken place.
It will be noted that, as previously reported by Naija News, Obiano, who had just recently been turned over to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, was hauled up by EFCC agents at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Thursday night at about 8.30 p.m. on Thursday.
In the course of his journey to the United States, he was apprehended.
When asked about the issue during a conversation with BBC Pidgin, an EFCC spokeswoman confirmed that Obiano had been detained because he was on the agency’s watchlist.
He went on to say that they were unable to apprehend him sooner because of his immunity as Governor in office.
“He has not been released. it’s fake news. He is in our custody and is currently being moved to Abuja”, the EFCC spokesman said.
As Uwujaren pointed out, Obiano had been on the EFCC’s radar for many months and was only arrested after handing over control to his successor, Charles Soludo, because of his governor’s immunity, which he enjoyed until he passed over office to Soludo.
His statement said that the EFCC had sought information on the former governor’s journey out of the nation from airports or other points of departure from the country from the Nigeria Immigration Service.
