Bloodsheds, Houses Destroyed As Okada Riders Clash With Traders

On Wednesday, traders and commercial motorcyclists known as Okoda battled in Dei Dei, an Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) neighbourhood in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

At least five people were murdered and residences were set on fire in the conflict, according to reports.

According to a local, the conflict began after an accident involving an Okada guy.

Five persons that I know have been killed in this incident. We have been calling for security intervention to no avail,” the resident told Daily Trust.

We are really worried that this crisis is tilting towards  ethnic dimension.”

The merchants are claimed to have assaulted the Okada driver, whom they blamed for the passenger’s death due to his irresponsibility.

The okada riders apparently went to save him from the assailants, but the situation quickly escalated.

According to another report, the driver of the trailer that crushed the passenger to death was assaulted and other people came to his aid.

Security officers have arrived on the location, according to Daily Trust, to avoid additional bloodshed.

This happened on the same day that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu outlawed the operating of commercial motorbikes in six local government areas, according to Naija02.

Sanwo-Olu made the statement during a meeting at the State House in Ikeja on Wednesday with the leaders of the state’s security agencies.

According to the governor, the absolute prohibition on Okada in the six local councils will go into effect on June 1, 2022, and will be strictly implemented.

The restriction in the six local councils, according to Sanwo-Olu, is part of the state’s phase of outlawing okadas.

Remember that the ban was enacted after several Okada motorcyclists killed a sound engineer.

Last weekend, the engineer was slain and set fire in the state’s Lekki axis.
