AI Roker was born to parents Isabel and Albert Lincoln Roker Sr., with Jamaican and Bahamian ancestry, respectively. Growing up in the borough of Queens, New York City, he initially had aspirations of becoming a cartoonist. He attended Xavier High School in Manhattan and was raised in the Catholic faith, following his mother’s religion. In 1976, AI Roker earned a B.A. in communications from the State University of New York at Oswego.
AI Roker Career:
During his time at SUNY Oswego, from 1974 to 1976, Roker worked as a weather anchor for CBS station WHEN-TV (now WTVH) in Syracuse, New York. Additionally, he served as a DJ at WNYO, the college radio station. After completing his studies, Roker moved to Washington, D.C., where he took up a position as a weathercaster at independent station WTTG, owned by Metromedia. He then joined NBC’s WKYC in Cleveland in 1978, marking the beginning of his career with the network.
