Black Coffee, originally named Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, was born and raised in Umlazi, South Africa. In 1990, a taxi accident during Nelson Mandela’s release celebrations left him with a severe injury to his left arm, which was fortunately not amputated. Despite the challenge, he pursued his passion for music and studied jazz at Technikon Natal, now known as Durban University of Technology. During this time, he joined an Afro-pop group called SHANA (Simply Hot and Naturally African) with his schoolmates.
Black Coffee Career:
Black Coffee’s breakthrough came after participating in the Red Bull Music Academy in 2004. His song “Happiness” was included in the album “DJs at Work,” which marked the beginning of his rise to prominence.
