Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, the House Majority Leader, has accused several presidential advisers and senior APC officials of deceiving President Muhammadu Buhari over the Electoral Act 2022 revision.
The National Assembly changed the Electoral Act to enable statutory delegates to participate in political party congresses, primaries, and conventions, according to Naija02.
Section 84(8) of the Act was specifically revised by both houses of the Assembly to enable automatic delegates to participate in the next party primaries.
Following the amendment, the clerk of the National Assembly sent the amended bill to the President for assent on May 13, and Buhari was yet to sign it.
Doguwa told The Punch that several members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet and key APC leaders are lobbying him not to sign the law.
Nigerians will reject a planned effort to sabotage the presidential primaries by refusing to consent to the altered article of the Electoral Act, according to the legislator.
He said:
“Some people are trying to mislead the innocent old man in the name of constitutional democracy to which they have no knowledge at all.
“Declining assent to the amended clause of the Electoral Act on statutory delegates would amount to a calculated design to ambush the presidential primaries come 30th May/1st June 2022, which I believe Nigerians will not accept.”
He also recommended political parties to disregard the President’s delay in assenting to the election act modification and approve statutory delegates in accordance with their separate constitutions.
